TW: war, death, killing, attempt to suicide, violence, child sexual assaults
#qotd did you read this book? How was your experiences?
“It may be unfair, but what happens in a few days, sometimes even a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime, Amir.”
Amir’s father was right. What happened on that frightful day of kite fighting competition in Kabul changed the entire life of Amir and Hasan.
This is a story of friendship, betrayal, guilt, redemption, a series of shameful lies, cowardliness, pure hearts and a country; Afghanistan.
Every time I come across these pure souls, I feel this world doesn’t deserve them. I don’t understand how this cruel world produces people like Hasan and at the same time some human looking monsters.
Rahim Khan, the mentor of Amir, was right. It’s always the world vs us and the world always wins. We see what is happening in Afghanistan till now. I am not saying a fiction book will give you a hundred percent correct information about history. We should not expect that either. But sometimes the world hits us with its reality which is more scary than fiction.
Among all these, two boys who were like brothers lost their childhood, their homes one day. Only if the truth were told. You see, the unresolved past never leaves us. You can’t escape from it. Amir couldn’t and it was difficult to forgive himself.
I don’t know if I am angry with him. Maybe I pity him or have sympathy for him. But I can’t forget that both were children at that moment. I don’t know if I am happy with how Sourav ended up at last. Till then, I became numb. Because life has treated them the worst. And I can’t forget that they were children.
Dear Hasan and Sourav,
I know this world has treated you the worst. I am sorry and also grateful for your existence. Every time there will be confusion of choosing, I will choose kindness and I promise you I will try to stand up for what’s right.
Because for you, a thousand times over.
Always.
